New Study Links Bone Loss to Dementia Risk

The study included 23 older adults with hypertension, all taking blood pressure medication for at least four months. All participants were required to exercise three times a week for ten weeks by cycling on a stationary bike. One group exercised between 7 and 10 a.m., and the other only exercised between 5 and 8 p.m.

Researchers found that although diastolic blood pressure decreased similarly in both groups, systolic blood pressure only decreased after evening exercise. In both groups, researchers also measured the autonomic functions, which are nervous system functions that regulate involuntarily physiologic processes. An improvement in the neural responses to changes in blood pressure (known as the arterial tonus) was found to be responsible for greater blood pressure benefit from evening stress.
“Although any exercise is always better than no exercise, people who need to achieve faster regularization of blood pressure or who don’t see benefits from exercise might want to try working out in the evening,” said the study’s first author Leandro Brito, Ph.D. “These findings replicate what we found in a previous study of middle-aged men with hypertension on blood pressure medicine, but now we understand the neural mechanisms that contribute.”

They found that as little as a handful of nuts every day, which is about 30 grams, could lower the risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease by 20 to 25 percent. They even said that more nuts are better and that eating just a few nuts per day is better than none.

Was there a magic nut to focus on? Not really, they said. Although almonds, pistachios, and walnuts appeared to be the best at lowering cholesterol. They still said they found no conclusive evidence to recommend some nuts over others.

That’s great news for you because you can pick the nuts that taste best to you and likely enjoy their heart health benefits. A couple of words of advice, though.

Although commonly thought of as a nut, peanuts are actually legumes. They are also extremely healthy and offer many of the benefits nuts do. However, they are not in the nut family.
Lastly, nuts dipped in chocolate, or candied would likely see their benefits nullified by the high levels of sugar in the candy. So if you’re going for some benefit from your nuts, select raw, roasted, and/or unsalted varieties without the candy layer.

Nuts seem to benefit cholesterol levels in the blood, which is important to keep low so fat does not build up in arterial walls – a process called atherosclerosis, which is one of the biggest risk factors for heart attacks.

It’s important to note that the study did not prove that nut consumption improved cholesterol, just that there was a strong association.

During the follow-up, around three-quarters of the participants had no hearing loss, but the remaining one-quarter had some hearing loss. Among those, 11.7% used hearing aids. The researchers concluded that participants with hearing loss who were not using hearing aids had a 42% higher risk of all-cause dementia compared to participants with normal hearing. No increased risk was found in people with hearing loss who used hearing aids.

“Close to four-fifths of people experiencing hearing loss do not use hearing aids in the UK. Hearing loss may begin early in one’s 40s, and there is evidence that gradual cognitive decline before a dementia diagnosis can last 20 to 25 years. Our findings highlight the urgent need for the early introduction of hearing aids when someone starts to experience hearing impairment.
A group effort from across society is necessary, including raising awareness of hearing loss and the potential links with dementia, increasing accessibility to hearing aids by reducing cost, and more support for primary care workers to screen for hearing impairment, raise awareness, and deliver treatment such as fitting hearing aids,” said study author, Dongshan Zhu.

During the study, researchers also examined how other factors may impact the associations between hearing loss and dementia. This included factors such as loneliness, depression, and social isolation. It was suggested that less than 8% of the association between hearing aid use and decreased dementia risk could be removed by improving psychosocial problems. This indicates that the increase in dementia risk is most likely due to the direct effects of hearing aids rather than indirect causes.

The researchers used data from a nationwide health survey conducted in 2005 and 2006, examining factors including feeling unrested, sleep duration, length of time to fall asleep, and how much sleep people were getting.

After controlling for variables affecting sleep, like marital status and age, they found that dog owners were more likely to have sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. They were also more reliant on sleep medications and woke up feeling unrested.
Cat owners were more likely to have leg jerks and snore. They were also more likely to have trouble falling and staying asleep. The difference may be that cats are more active at night.

Of course, there is a trade-off for having pets. They can provide a sense of companionship and security that may help with depression, stress, and anxiety.

It is important to note that the study does not prove that owning cats or dogs leads to poor sleep. It just shows that there is a connection. Further, the research did not specify that owners slept with their pets, just that they were in the house. Sugary beverages are becoming more popular, with many people consuming them daily. However, they can have a significant impact, especially for those with type 2 diabetes or other health issues. People need to understand the implications of these sugary drinks on health so that they can choose healthier options.

For this new study, researchers analyzed health data from 9,252 women participating in the Nurse’s Health Study and 3,519 men participating in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, all of whom had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at baseline or some point during the study. The study lasted for an average of 18.5 years which participants reported how often they consumed sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs), fruit juice, coffee, tea, low-fat cow’s milk, full-fat cow’s milk, and plain water.

Researchers found that in people who regularly consumed SSBs, there was higher all-cause mortality and higher incidence of mortality from cardiovascular disease. Each additional serving of SSBs was associated with an 8% higher all-cause mortality.

Participants who consumed healthier beverages such as coffee, tea, low-fat cow’s milk, and plain water had a decreased rate of all-cause from cardiovascular disease. Replacing one daily serving of an SSB with one serving of coffee was associated with an 18% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 20% lower risk of cardiovascular mortality; tea with 16% and 24% lower risk; plain water with a 16% and 20% lower risk, and low-fat cow’s milk with a 12% and 19% lower risk.
