Kidney pain in the morning: Common causes and treatment tips

Kidney pain in the morningOur kidneys are two bean-shaped organs found on the sides of the abdomen that play a vital role in helping remove waste products that the body generates. Problems that arise from kidney disease may compromise this function and even lead to kidney pain in the morning or kidney pain in general.

Pain originating from your kidneys is often confused with pain experienced in the back. This is primarily due to the anatomical position of the kidneys themselves. They’re located in the posterior part of the abdominal cavity.

Causes of kidney pain in the morning

Kidney stones

Also known as renal lithalsas and nephrolithiasis, kidney stones are hard deposits made up of minerals and salts that build up in the renal system. These stones may develop and affect any part of the urinary tract system, from your kidney to your bladder. Most people associate kidney stones with severe pain, as passing them can be quite discomforting. Depending on the size of the stone and any resulting complications, simply passing the stone is the recommended treatment method. This can often be facilitated by drinking excessive amounts of water. Larger kidney stones may require shockwave therapy to break larger stones down in size, making them easier to pass.

Kidney infection

Bacteria may enter the urinary tract system leading to a condition called pyelonephritis. This typically occurs through an untreated urinary tract infection. However, diabetes, nerve problems that affect bladder emptying, and kidney stones are all predisposing factors for a kidney infection. Common symptoms of pyelonephritis include shaking chills, nausea and vomiting, blood-tinged urine, and flank pain.

Urinary tract infection

A UTI is an infection that can affect any part of the urinary system. Infection of the lower urinary tract—the bladder and urethra—is the most common. Women are known for being the most at-risk for UTI development owe to their shorter urethra. It allows bacteria to reach other urinary structures much easier. UTIs can present with burning pain upon urination, blood in the urine, and flank pain.

Kidney cancer

There are many different types of kidney cancers, with most originating in two parts of the organ: the renal tubule and the renal pelvis. Much like any type of growing cancer, it’s the result of uncontrolled cell growth and multiplication of cancerous cells. Kidney cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in the world. Typically, symptoms include frequent pain below the rib or lower back and blood in the urine.

Kidney pain in the morning treatment

Having kidney pain absolutely requires the aid of a medical professional. If you have problems with urination or have any of the kidney-related symptoms mentioned, it is recommended to speak to a doctor as soon as you can. Putting off treatment can result in irreversible tissue damage that may worsen the overall prognosis of your kidney condition.

For the causes of kidney pain, each may require a specific mode of treatment. In the case of infection, antibiotics targeting the most common bacteria involved will be the best form of therapy. Excessive pain may be remedied with the use of prescribed medication as it can become intolerable. Kidney cancer may be treated with or a combination of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

If you have seen a doctor and they have ruled out any life-threatening conditions, the following home remedies may provide some relief for kidney pain in the morning.
