Communication, empathy, honesty and affection are all important for a happy marriage, but did you know that you’re eating habits can also effect the health of your marriage? Below are four ways in which poor eating habits can ruin your marriage.
Many people have a tendency to ‘let themselves go,’ when they get married. The security of a marriage often results in poor eating habits, because staying fit isn’t as much of a priority and this ultimately results in weight gain. In fact, one study found that the average married women in the United States will gain between 37 lbs. and 54 lbs., in the first 10 years of her marriage. And that’s not it; marriage also increases the risk for obesity in both men and women.
Unhealthy eating habits will more than likely leave you feeling sluggish and fatigued. It will also reduce your motivation to get up and do things and overtime you may find that you are living to eat, instead of eating to live. In addition, poor eating habits can make you more inclined to take solace in the comfort of your coach instead of engaging in activities that you and your spouse used to enjoy. All of the above results in a poor quality of life and in most cases, a compromised marriage.
Unhealthy eating habits can cause levels of the stress hormone – cortisol to spike. This is problematic because you are simply not at your best when you are experiencing stress. Most processed food will also cause your blood sugar levels to fluctuate, and blood sugar fluctuations can cause mood swings, fatigue, agitation, exhaustion and an inability to focus– none of which are congruent with a healthy relationship. Finally, the inevitable weight gain caused by poor eating habits, often results in a loss of confidence and self-esteem both inside and outside of the bedroom.
Bad eating habits negatively affect your sex life in a multitude of ways. It can make you feel lethargic and bloated, making sex and intimacy seem unappealing. As mentioned above, it may also lead to weight gain and obesity, which can make you feel self-conscious about your body and prevent you from being intimate with your partner. In addition to how it makes you feel, the weight gain may also negatively affect your partners level of attraction to you. Finally, if your poor eating habits have led to obesity and you are a male, your testosterone levels can plummet and you will have a much higher risk for developing erectile dysfunction and impotency.

If your eating habits could best be described as ‘poor,’ consider revising them, not just for your own physical and mental health, but also for the health of your marriage! Try to reduce your consumption of processed and refined foods and add in some healthy foods with aphrodisiac properties instead. Asparagus, almonds, bananas, avocados, oysters, figs, honey and dark chocolate, are just a few aphrodisiac foods that may help to refuel your marriage.
