varicose veins travelTaking a vacation is always a great, as you can discover a new part of the world, relax, and get away from your daily routine. But if you have varicose veins, there are special considerations to keep in mind to avoid complications.

Varicose veins are the bulging veins you can see. For some people, they are simply ugly to look at, while for others, it can cause swollen, painful legs. Having varicose veins increases your risk of deep vein thrombosis (blood clot), which can be fatal if the clot dislodges and travels throughout the body to cause another, more severe clot.


There are heightened risks when a person with varicose veins travels. If you aren’t familiar with them, they could increase your risk of health complications.

Here are some of those considerations to keep in mind if you’re planning a trip this summer.

Varicose Veins Risk Factors When Travelling

  • Wear compression stockings for car and plane rides
  • Ensure the compression stockings you’re wearing are the proper fit, or they won’t do their intended job of returning blood back to the heart and prevent blood pooling
  • Don’t roll or double layer stockings, as this can be quite harmful
  • When taking prolonged car rides, ensure you’re taking breaks to stretch your legs
  • Stay well hydrated because dehydration causes blood to become thicker, increasing the risk of blood clots
  • When you arrive at your destination, take 20 minutes to lay on your back and elevate your legs higher than your heart to allow any pooled blood to return to the heart
  • Take advantage of any swimming opportunities as it helps to release pressure in the legs
  • Avoid soaking in hot tubs or hot water as this causes veins to swell, which can worsen problems
  • Monitor your legs for any changes in vein appearance or feelings

By keeping these tips in mind, you can have a safe and enjoyable vacation without varicose veins complications.
