Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. This common adage may be true, but irregardless of the fact, there are certain cosmetic problems that can cause a great deal of embarrassment to the person who is experiencing them. Below is a list of some of the most embarrassing beauty problems and their most common causes.

Damage from Acne

Acne is one of the most common beauty problems and almost everyone will experience it at some point in their lifetime.  Unfortunately for 20 percent of Americans, acne is not a rare or fleeting issue, instead, it is a chronic problem that can cause a great deal of shame and embarrassment.  Some of the most common causes of acne include: hormones, prescribed medications, oil-based cosmetics, physical irritation, an unhealthy diet, food allergies, environmental pollutants, genetics and stress.

Age spots are painless, brownish-black, flat spots that appear on the skin. They are often associated with aging and most people do not develop them until they reach the age of forty, if it all.  Aging is not the sole cause of sun spots however; they are primarily caused by exposure to UV rays and they are a sign of sun damage. Some lesser known causes of sun spots include: pregnancy, post-inflammatory responses to skin damage (such as pimples), stress, pollution and certain menopausal supplements.

Premature Wrinkles

Although most people would gladly trade in their winkles for skin that is as smooth as a baby’s bottom, wrinkles are a natural sign of aging and not a just cause for embarrassment. Excessive wrinkling, or deep wrinkles that appear on an individual who is still in their twenties or thirties however, may cause the individual to be self-conscious of their appearance. The most common causes of premature wrinkles include: sun damage, smoking, alcohol abuse, and an unhealthy diet.  At the root of all of these causes is the excessive free radicals that they release in the body and the damage that the free radicals cause to the collagen in the matrix of the skin.

Raccoon Eyes

Chronic black circles under the eyes are not an inevitable part of aging; they are more often than not caused by health issues which should be identified and addressed. Aside from chronic exhaustion, one of the most common causes of dark circles is allergies (both food and environmental), followed by anemia and then atopic dermatitis.  Sun damage can also cause dark circles, because sun damage causes your body to produce more of the skin coloring pigment – melanin.  Racoon eyes can also be caused by kidney damage and/or adrenal fatigue.

Dermatitis

Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin that is oftentimes itchy and red. There are many different types of dermatitis and some of the most common include eczema, dandruff, allergic dermatitis and perioral dermatitis (a rash around the mouth and/or eyes).  Dermatitis can be caused by a variety of factors including: contact with an allergen, stress, immune system damage, a poor diet and oily skin or hair.

Free radicals and excessive inflammation are at the root of many of the above embarrassing beauty problems.    A visit to a holistic healthcare practitioner can help you to address these issues from the inside out, as opposed to just living with them or attempting to mask them with expensive cosmetics.
