Fibromyalgia patients show increased risk of hyperparathyroidism in women, new studyFibromyalgia patients show increased risk of hyperparathyroidism in women, according to a new study. Hyperparathyroidism is a disease caused by an overactive parathyroid. Both fibromyalgia and hyperparathyroidism share similar symptoms.

The researchers uncovered their findings by examining 100 women with fibromyalgia and 57 women without the condition. They measured the levels of parathyroid hormone, calcium, and albumin, correlating them with symptoms in the fibromyalgia group.

Fibromyalgia patients had normal values of mean serum calcium and parathyroid hormone, but their levels of the parathyroid hormones were elevated, compared to the controls. High calcium levels were seen in six percent of fibromyalgia patients, but only 17 percent of these women had high levels of parathyroid hormone exhibiting normal calcium levels.

The study uncovered that women with fibromyalgia have a higher frequency of hyperparathyroidism and normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism, compared to the general public. The research is still in the preliminary stages, and additional research is required to confirm the findings.

Fibromyalgia and its link to thyroid hormone

There is a strong link between fibromyalgia and the thyroid, as at least 15 percent of hypothyroidism patients develop fibromyalgia. The link that both conditions share stems from sleep disturbances and their role in setting hormone sensitivity. It is believed that fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism may be linked due to the thyroid hormone’s ability to set the body’s sensitivity to a number of hormones.

The thyroid hormone also plays a large role in sleep, which is another potential link between the two conditions. Sleep disturbances are a major component of fibromyalgia, and sleep regulation may play a role in the development of fibromyalgia or may be caused by the same disease-casing mechanism.

Furthermore, the clinical features of both fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism are the same, as both conditions share many common symptoms. Symptoms resulting from low levels of thyroid hormones are seen in both fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism, which means low thyroid hormone could mediate documented features in fibromyalgia.

Hypothyroidism risk increases in chronic kidney disease patients with declining kidney function. The study looked at a nationally representative cohort of 461,607 veterans with chronic kidney disease stages 3-5. The researchers found that each 10 mL/min/1.73 m2 lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was associated with an 18 percent increased risk of hypothyroidism in adjusted analyses.
