conference on agingThe National Institutes of Health brought together more than a hundred federal, state and local partners to encourage older adults to move more and stay active.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), unveiled Go4Life Month, a national exercise campaign for people 50 years old or older. Go4Life Month will occur in September, and sponsor activities across communities.

Research shows Americans become more sedentary as they age. The Go4Life program aims to combat chronic conditions and disability associated with aging by encouraging exercise. The campaigns provides motivational tools and information about physical activity to help older adults get moving.

According to NIA Director Richard Hodes, one recent study found seniors in their 70s and 80s had improved mobility after participating in a structured physical activity program.

“It’s never too late for exercise to have a positive effect on your health,” said NIA Director Richard Hodes. Go4Life Month will help draw attention to the critical importance of exercise with age and the resources that we can provide to support adults who want to do more,” Hodes said.

A number of communities and associations have already benefitted from the campaign including NIA, the YMCA, and the Association for Community Living.

The Go4Life campaign has an interactive website – Go4Life.nia.nih.gov – with sample exercises, success stories, and free materials. People interested in becoming a partner with Go4Life can also sign up on the website.
