Summer protection tips for cooking on fire and preventing sunburns With BBQ season in full swing, the risk of accidental fires and burns is much greater during the summertime. Dr. James Gallagher from New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center said, “Before using your grill, make sure all of the parts — including the gas tank — are in good condition. If you notice any leaks, cracks, or breaks, replace the parts before using.”

In order to better protect yourself from fires and burns, BBQs should always be kept outdoors and at least 10 feet away from buildings, deck railings, and overhanging branches. Utensils used for BBQ should always have long handles. Keep a garden hose or sand bucket close by to put out any small fires that may emerge. A fire extinguisher is also useful to keep nearby. Never leave the grill unattended.

Furthermore, to protect yourself from sunburns that may occur while being outdoors and grilling, ensure you are wearing an effective sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Sunscreen should be reapplied after excessive sweating or entering a swimming pool. Even on cloudy days, it’s a good idea to apply sunscreen, as the sun’s UV rays can still pose a threat.
