FDA warns off contact lens The FDA has put out warnings on misuse of contact lenses, more specifically, if you use a contact lens solution with hydrogen peroxide and do not correctly follow the instructions, you are putting your eyes at danger.

Hydrogen peroxide contact lens solutions are good options as they do not contain preservatives, which many individuals may be allergic to. Although hydrogen peroxide solutions are suitable for many contact lens wearers, they can still pose a risk to eyes.
Optometrist at the FDA, Dr. Bernard Lepri said, “You should never put hydrogen peroxide directly into your eyes or on your contact lenses.” This can lead to stinging, burning, and even damage to the cornea.

It’s also important to follow the solution instructions and disinfecting process, as the neutralizer turns the peroxide into water and oxygen, making it safe to put on your eyes.

Since 2010, the FDA has received 73 reports of burning and stinging associated with hydrogen peroxide contact lens solutions, and in many of these cases it was due to user negligence. Reports of side effects from hydrogen peroxide solutions are on the decline as the FDA has implemented that solutions carry stronger warning labels.
