cataracts and osteoporosisCataracts is a fairly common eye condition that causes clouding of the lens. If left untreated, cataracts can lead to vision loss. Surgery can help remove cataracts and improve vision.

A study explored the potential link between cataracts and cataract surgery with the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.

The researchers studied 57,972 cataract patients and matched them with 57,972 controls. During the average follow-up period of 6.4 years, 17,450 patients with cataracts and 12,627 non-patients developed osteoporosis. Having a diagnosis of cataracts was found to increase the risk of osteoporosis or bone fractures by 29 percent.

The diagnosis of cataracts was associated with a 43 percent increased risk of osteoporosis, a 16 percent increased risk of hip fracture, a 25 percent increased risk of vertebral fracture, and a 24 percent increased risk of other fractures. For patients who underwent cataract surgery, their risk of osteoporosis was 42 percent lower.

First author of the study Dr. Huei-Kai Huang explained, “Appropriate management of cataracts may decrease osteoporosis and fracture risks.” Co-author Dr. Ching-Hui Loh added, “I strongly recommend all elders with osteoporosis or fractures to check their vision.”

Although additional research is required to fully understand the link between cataracts and osteoporosis, it’s important that you work towards maintaining healthy vision and strong bones by adhering to a healthy lifestyle.
