Fruit can be a lot of fun in the summer. They can add great flavor and a texture boost to salads, cocktails, and more all while being packed full of nutrients and antioxidants that can promote health in a variety of ways. Let’s look at a few seasonal options that complement the climate and can promote health and functionality.

Cherries

Cherries are nutrient-dense and high in fiber, potassium, and antioxidants. Because of their nutritional profile, cherries may help fight inflammation and benefit heart health. The polyphenol content found in these small stone fruits may help combat oxidative stress to reduce inflammation. These benefits can promote overall health and might protect against several chronic diseases.

Cherries can be enjoyed fresh as a sweet snack or dessert.

Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe, sometimes referred to as muskmelon, is another nutrient-packed food that can help you fit more fruits and vegetables into your diet. A single cup of diced cantaloupe has your recommended intake of vitamin A for the day and nearly all of your vitamin C. Both of these nutrients promote strong immune function. Cantaloupe is also a great source of zeaxanthin, an antioxidant that plays a crucial role in eye health and preventing age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the leading cause of vision impairment in older Americans. Mango is also a great source of water to help you stay hydrated in the heat.

Cantaloupe can be muddled into fresh summer cocktails and sweet wines or sliced and diced for salads.

Watermelon

A lot of people think watermelon is just sugar and water, but it’s not Kool-Aid. It is a very nutrient-dense fruit that can be a healthy and refreshing summer snack. Watermelon is one of—if not the—best sources of the antioxidant lycopene. Lycopene may help lower blood pressure and protect against heart disease. Although being a great source of lycopene, watermelon is also a good source of several vitamins and minerals that contribute to a healthy diet.

Blending watermelon with ice cubes makes a sweet, tasty treat that’s rich in electrolytes to keep you hydrated on a hot day. And because it’s so sweet, having a few slices can serve as a low-calorie way to satisfy a sweet tooth.
