Is Raspberry Ketone the Miracle Weight Loss Aid?

With obesity levels on the rise, people around the world are looking for a quick weight loss aid. A recent airing of the Dr. Oz show showcased a “miracle” weight loss aid – raspberry ketone. As the result of the claims made on the show, people are rushing out to buy this weight loss product, but does it really work?

Effects on Obesity

The Dr. Oz show reported that raspberry ketone can help with weight loss for people that have fat all over the body. He stated that the raspberry ketone supplement is safe, with no known side effects. The way in which the raspberry ketone supplement is believed to work is by regulating adiponectin which is a hormone that is responsible for boosting fat metabolism. With a higher metabolism, the fat that is in your cells break up more effectively which helps your body to burn fat faster. When questioned as to whether it was better to consume raspberries, Dr. Oz stated that in order to get the desired effects, you would have to consume 90 pounds of raspberries while taking a 100mg supplement would have the same weight loss effect. At the end of the segment, Dr. Oz stated that this is a weight loss aid to help you get over the “hump”. He stated that diet and exercise should be used for sustained weight loss, and that raspberry ketone should only be used as a weight loss aid for short periods of time.

Diet and Exercise

The problem with the claims that were made on the Dr. Oz show is that there have been no human trials that have shown that raspberry ketones are beneficial for weight loss. In a 2010 study, raspberry ketones were given to mice and it prevented the mice from gaining weight when fed high-fat diets. Additional research, using human subjects is needed to see if raspberry ketone is beneficial for weight loss and to determine the mechanism by which it may work as a weight loss aid. For the time-being, eating raspberries or taking raspberry ketone supplements in addition to a healthy diet and exercise may provide you with some weight loss benefits.

Diet and exercise changes are two of the best changes that you can make to experience weight loss and other health benefits. Eating a healthy diet consisting of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low fat foods is a start to a healthy lifestyle. Limiting portion sizes will also help with weight loss. Adding in a few days of exercise to your weekly routine will help to burn some calories and will hopefully result in dropping a few extra pounds.

There might not be a miracle solution for weight loss. But changing our regular diet and exercise routines should be the first step to controlling our weight. Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly will help to lose weight and keep it off. A supplement such as raspberry ketone may or may not help with weight loss. The jury is out, as of right now, there are only individual weight loss success stories. The claims reported on the Dr. Oz show have not been backed up by research conducted on humans. Even though it’s hard not to get excited about a quick fix to weight loss, we have to hold back our excitement until research back up the weight loss claims of this product. For now, stick to a healthy diet and exercise as a means to lose weight.
