joint painIf you live with joint pain, the last thing you want to do is exercise, but exercise can help you improve joint pain along with improving mobility. Our joints help to hold our skeleton together along with supporting any movement we make.

Along with pain, joints may feel stiff, swollen, and a decrease in motion can be felt. Even something as simple as getting out of bed in the morning can be a daunting task. Walking, climbing stairs, sitting, and standing can all be accompanied by these symptoms.

So, if these simple tasks can lead to joint pain, why would a person with joint pain want to exercise? That’s because exercise strengthens the muscles that surround achy joints, which increases blood flow to the area. In turn, this reduces discomfort. Additionally, exercise releases endorphins that make you feel good.

Here are some simple exercises that you can complete regularly to obtain relief from your achy, stiff, and swollen joints all while improving mobility.

Exercises that improve joint pain

Walking: Walking helps keep your bones and muscles strong and improves cardiovascular health.

Swimming: Swimming is a great low-impact activity that allows you to stretch your muscles and improve strength. Swimming has been known to control weight, boost mood, and improve sleep.

Weight training: Weight training helps build muscle, and the stronger your muscles are, the better supported your joints are. Weight training consists of the use of machines, free weights, resistance bands, or even using household items.

Cycling: If running isn’t your thing due to the impact on your joints, then cycling is a better option for you as it mimics the motion of running without the impact.

Yoga and Pilates: Yoga and Pilates help improve many areas of joint pain along with overall health. Not only do these exercises improve strength, but they also boost mobility, flexibility, balance, muscle relaxation, and reduce the risk of falls, which can all contribute to painful joints. Pilates also improve muscle strength.

By integrating these exercises into your daily routine, you can begin to experience less joint pain and get more out of life.
