wintertime-superfoods-fruitIt’s always better to eat foods grown locally, and choosing fruits and vegetables that are in season is also a good idea. Case in point, there are wintertime fruits that are deemed superfoods because of their numerous health benefits. The list below will help you eat smarter this winter all the while promoting good health.

7 superfoods to eat in the winter

Kumquats: This fruit looks like a tiny orange packed with powerful antioxidants that can help improve your health. Most of these disease-fighting antioxidants are actually concentrated in the edible skin of the kumquat, also providing you with lots of fiber along with potassium and other essential vitamins.

Carambolas (star fruit): Although star fruit may seem tropical, it is a wintertime fruit. Carambolas are loaded with vitamin C and potassium, which means your immune system will be in top-notch shape just in time for the cold and flu season.

Quinces: These may resemble apples and pears, but they are actually found to be much healthier. Some studies have shown they offer protective effects against the flu.

Rambutans: Rambutans are very high in antioxidants and have been suggested to be healthier than green tea. Plus, they contain iron and calcium for added nutritional value.
Longans: Part of the lychee family, longans have been used to settle upset stomachs, reduce fevers, and treat the flu. They also pack powerful antioxidants to keep you healthy all year round.

Persimmons: Some research has suggested that a persimmon a day may be more effective at keeping the doctor away than the proverbial apple. Persimmons offer much more dietary fiber and other heart-friendly minerals and vitamins than apples do.

Asian pears: Asian pears offer significantly more fiber than other pear varieties. Plus, they can be stored for longer periods of time at room temperature or up to three months in the refrigerator.

This winter you may want to add some of these seasonal superfoods to your grocery list in order to stay healthy.
