5 Natural Remedies for Age Spots

121714085As you age, you may start to notice unsightly dark spots on your skin that may make you cringe.  These dark spots are known as age spots or liver spots, and usually occur in areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, shoulders, arms, and hands.  While older age, excessive sun exposure, skin type, and genetic disposition could make the development of age spots inevitable, the bright spot at the end of the dark tunnel is a number of natural remedies that can help to significantly minimize their appearance.

Natural Remedy #1 – Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that has been shown to possess antioxidant properties.  Vitamin E has many uses, including being used for the treatment of age spots. Taking a vitamin E supplement of 400 I.U. per day and rubbing vitamin E directly on to the area of skin affected by age spots will help to minimize the appearance of dark spots over time.   Vitamin E that is applied directly to your skin will be soaked up so there is no need to wipe it from your skins surface as well.

Natural Remedy #2 – Aloe Vera Gel

If you have an aloe vera plant at home, breaking off a leaf and rubbing the gel onto your age spots will help to moisturize your skin, leaving it smooth and silky. Additionally, aloe vera will help to lighten the appearance of age spots and encourage the growth of new skin cells. You can allow the aloe vera gel to soak into your skin or, if you prefer, you can wipe it off after 45 minutes.

Natural Remedy #3 -Witch Hazel

Witch hazel contains antioxidants which help to prevent the breakdown of tissue. You can apply witch hazel with a cotton ball to age spots. This will help to minimize their appearance and can be purchased at your local drugstore.

Natural Remedy #4 – Lemon Juice

Slicing a lemon and dabbing lemon juice onto your age spots may be one of the easiest natural remedies that you can try to reduce the appearance of age spots. Lemon juice contains a mild citric acid which helps to remove old, darkened skin allowing new skin to form.  Additionally, lemon juice contains a natural lightening agent which will help to lighten your age spots, making them less noticeable. Lemon juice also contains vitamin C which helps to increase circulation allowing for quicker cell growth, helping to give you a radiant appearance.  For best results, leave lemon juice on your skin for a minimum of 30 minutes before washing it away.

Natural Remedy #5 – Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a natural remedy that contains a variety of minerals and nutrients, such as sulfur, which helps to fight the effects of aging on your skin.  Combining apple cider vinegar and onion juice and applying it directly onto age spots will help to minimize their appearance.  In order to get the best results possible, leave the apple cider vinegar and onion juice mixture on your skin for at least 30 minutes before rinsing it off.

While there are a variety of natural remedies that may help to minimize the look of your age spots, preventing age spots from occurring in the first place is the best way to maintain youthful, glowing skin.  Preventing age spots begins with proper skin care when you’re exposed to the sun.  This means avoiding contact with the sun as much as possible and using appropriate sunscreen when sun exposure.  If, however, you’re past the point of prevention, utilizing these natural remedies will help to minimize and lighten any unpleasant looking age spots.
